Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Have questions about thermally conductive materials, converting services, or bringing your design into production? You’re in the right place. Explore answers to common questions from engineers, buyers, and OEMs, and learn how Rico Products can solve your thermal management and manufacturing challenges.

MATERIAL SELECTION

As electronics become smaller, faster, and more functional, power densities are increasing, generating more heat in smaller spaces. This raises the risks of overheating causing component damage, and system failures if heat is not properly managed.

Thermal management materials play a vital role in dissipating heat from electronics. By providing a heat transfer path from heat sources to heat sinks, safe operating temperatures can be maintained, improving safety, long-term reliability, and performance.

Selecting the right thermal material involves more than comparing conductivity values. Performance depends on factors such as:

  • Surface geometry and flatness
  • Air gaps and bond line thickness
  • Assembly pressure
  • Operating temperature
  • Environmental and chemical exposure
  • Material characteristics, such as silicone outgassing that can contaminate optical components

Rico Products, helps customers select the optimal material and conversion process for their application, reducing development time, avoiding costly mistakes, and improving long-term reliability.

Rico Products converts thermal materials into a wide range of production-ready formats, including:

  • Die-cut thermal pads
  • Gap-filling gels and pastes
  • Phase change materials
  • Thermally conductive tapes and adhesives
  • Multi-layer laminates
  • Propagation resistant materials
  • 3D molded formats.

Whether your application requires a specific geometry, thickness stack-up, dispensing format, or assembly-ready configuration, we can help deliver a solution tailored to your design and manufacturing needs.

Rico Products converts thermally conductive materials with conductivity values up to 20 W/m-K, supporting applications ranging from general heat dissipation to high-power, densely packaged electronic systems.

The highest thermal conductivity rating doesn’t always deliver the best real-world performance. Factors such as material thickness, surface irregularities, and assembly method also affect heat transfer. Our team helps customers select the material that delivers the best overall thermal performance for their application.

CONVERSION SERVICES

Yes. In addition to materials sourced from our preferred manufacturing partners, Rico Products also provides contract conversion services using customer-supplied materials. This approach is often used by OEMs managing global sourcing programs, approved material specifications, or consigned inventory.

Customers supply the raw material, while Rico Products provides the tooling, labor, process expertise, and quality control required to deliver production-ready converted components.

Rico Products provides precision rotary and flatbed die-cutting, kiss-cutting, slitting and lamination services for thermally conductive materials in roll, sheet, and custom laminate formats.

For tight tolerances and intricate geometries, we offer advanced compound and match-metal die-cutting capabilities. We can also integrate assembly-enhancing features such as pull tabs, and split liners to simplify part handling and installation.

Finished parts can be supplied in tape-and-reel or tray packaging, ready for automated pick-and-place and high-volume assembly operations.

Yes. Rapid prototyping and low-volume production are core capabilities at Rico Products. Using precision CNC cutting equipment, we produce prototype converted parts without requiring production tooling, allowing you to evaluate fit, form, function and thermal performance before committing to tooling or full-scale production.

This approach helps validate material selection, part geometry, and manufacturability early in the design cycle, reducing the risk of costly tooling changes, and accelerating time to production.

Yes. Rico Products repackages liquid and paste thermal management materials from bulk containers into virtually any production-ready dispensing format to match your manufacturing requirements.

Materials can be supplied in syringes, cartridges, pen systems, dual cartridges, jars, or other custom containers for prototype, low-volume, and high-volume production.

Whether you need precise dispense volumes, custom labeling, or specialized packaging, we can configure a solution that integrates seamlessly into your production process.

Yes. Rico Products supports overmolding and encapsulation of electronic components using advanced thermally conductive and flame retardant polymers, including thermoplastics, thermosets, and propagation-resistant foams.

Our specialized molding technologies and application expertise enable reliable processing of these highly filled materials for demanding thermal management applications.
